How big do you dream? In the world of the arts, our dreams can seem stratospheric. Luckily, every young artist who’s ever succeeded has some good folks in their corner. And the folks involved in the creation and continuation of The National High School Musical Theatre Awards (NHSMTA) are the best kind of folks in the corner of young people whose dreams include Broadway and beyond. From the Broadway League to the Pittsburgh CLO to the Nederlander Alliances and other amazing sponsors, there are many organizations instrumental in the future of the arts. One way they foster and support dreams is through the NHSMTA. You may have heard about the NHSMTA during the Tony Awards on Sunday, or perhaps you know someone who’s participated, but if you don’t know what they are, here’s the scoop.
Every year since 2009 students from around the US have participated in high school musical theatre competitions for a chance to come to New York and train with Broadway professionals. This year, from thirty professional theatres across the US seventy-four young people will come to New York and spend ten intense days working with Broadway veterans. At the culmination of the program, they will all make their Broadway debut on the stage of the Minskoff theatre, performing and competing to win the prestigious Jimmy® Award for Best Performance by an Actress and Best Performance by an Actor.
Apples and Oranges Arts proudly sponsors the NHSMTA for the fourth year, with an added bonus! This year we’re covering the experience from behind the scenes and sharing it with all of you! Follow along on social media or at our National High School Musical Theatre Awards Hub. Come along on the journey these amazing young artists take; from arriving in New York, to ten days of training with working Broadway professionals, to backstage shenanigans, all the way until the final night when they make their Broadway debuts on the stage of the Minskoff. We can’t wait to go on this adventure with them and all of you!
